Real woodcraft consists rather in knowing how to get along without the appliances of civilization than in adapting them to wildwood life.
Kephart, Horace, 1862-1931.

A very true statement. So is your own statement "Sometimes you gotta rough it to smooth it". I think it`s a balancing act between living a more spartan life while in the wilderness while still keeping with us a certain amount of modernity so as not to take the fun out of the outdoor experience. The overiding memories of any trip to the wilds should be good ones and not all hardship.
